Am I a Candidate for Fat Dissolving?

By Advanced Nurse Injector Stephanie  |  Face Injectables, Vaughan ON

The simplest answer: if you're at or near your goal weight and you can pinch a stubborn pocket of fat that won't move no matter how you eat or train, you're likely a good candidate for fat dissolving. But the full picture matters — so here's an honest, detailed guide to who this treatment is for, who it isn't, and how we decide.

First, what fat dissolving actually is

Fat dissolving injections (PCDC) are a non-surgical way to break down fat cells in a small, targeted area. A series of precise injections is placed into a pinchable pocket, and over the following weeks your body gradually clears the treated fat. There's no surgery, no machines, and no general anesthetic — just a nurse-led, mapped treatment done in-clinic. It's used most often for the double chin, lower belly, bra bulge, flanks, and upper arms. You can read more about the treatment on our fat dissolving in Vaughan page.

The #1 rule: it's contouring, not weight loss

This is the most important thing to understand before booking, and it decides candidacy more than anything else. Fat dissolving contours a specific pocket — it does not lower the number on your scale and it is not a weight-loss program. It's designed for people who are already close to their goal weight but have one or two stubborn areas that diet and exercise simply won't shift. If your goal is overall weight reduction, this is the wrong tool, and any honest injector will tell you that upfront.

You're likely a candidate if…

Most great candidates share these traits:

You can pinch the area. Fat dissolving works on subcutaneous fat — the soft, pinchable layer just under the skin. If you can grab the pocket between your fingers, it's the right type of fat.

It's a localized pocket. One or two defined areas (a lower-belly pooch, a double chin, the bra line) respond far better than diffuse, all-over fullness.

It's resisted diet and exercise. Genetic fat compartments don't care how disciplined you are. If you've done the work and one spot still won't budge, that's exactly what this treats.

You're at or near your goal weight. The treatment refines a shape you already have — it doesn't create weight loss.

You want natural, gradual results. Changes build over a short series, not overnight. If you're comfortable with a realistic timeline, you'll be happy with the process.

Areas that respond well

Double chin (submental): one of the most satisfying areas — a sharper jawline and profile. (For the chin we use Belkyra/Kybella specifically.)

Lower belly: the soft "pooch" that shows in fitted clothing and won't flatten with core work.

Bra bulge / back fold: the roll that spills over a fitted top or bra band.

Upper arms (bat wing): the pinchable fullness on the back of the arm that training doesn't reach.

Flanks / love handles: the pocket at the waistline.

If you can pinch it and it's stayed put despite your effort, it's usually mappable.

Who is NOT a candidate

Being honest about this protects your result and your investment. Fat dissolving is probably not right for you if:

Your goal is overall weight loss. It won't change your size or the scale.

The area is firm, not pinchable. Deep (visceral) fat that sits under the muscle can't be reached this way.

Your main concern is loose skin. Fat dissolving treats fat, not laxity — more on this below.

You're expecting a dramatic, overnight change. This is gradual, natural contouring.

You have certain medical conditions or are pregnant/breastfeeding. These are reviewed at your assessment to confirm it's safe and appropriate for you.

What about loose skin?

This is a common and important question. Fat dissolving reduces a fat pocket — it isn't a skin-tightening treatment. For many clients with good skin quality, the skin retracts nicely as the area slims. But if loose or crepey skin is your main concern, a different approach may serve you better, and we'll say so honestly at your consultation rather than treat where the result would be limited.

How the treatment works

Most clients need a short series — typically a few sessions spaced weeks apart — because the fat clears gradually and building the result in stages looks more natural. Each session, the area is mapped and treated with precise injections. Afterward, mild swelling or tenderness for a day or two is normal, and most people return to their routine quickly. Your exact number of sessions depends on the size of the pocket and your goal, and it's confirmed at your assessment — not guessed at online.

What results are realistic

Expect a smoother, more refined contour in the treated area — clothes fitting better, a cleaner profile — rather than a whole-body change. Results build across your series and continue settling for weeks afterward. They can be long-lasting when your weight stays stable, but this isn't a promise of permanence, and individual results vary. The goal is a natural improvement to one area, not a transformation of your whole shape.

How we decide: the assessment

The only real way to know if you're a candidate is a quick, nurse-led assessment. We do the pinch test on the area, check whether it's the right type of fat, review your health history and goals, and give you an honest answer plus a realistic plan and quote. There's no pressure — if it's not the right fit for you, we'll tell you, and we may suggest a better option instead. That honesty is the whole point: a natural result comes from treating the right person, the right way.

The bottom line

If you're near your goal weight, can pinch a stubborn pocket, and want a natural, non-surgical way to refine it, you're likely a strong candidate for fat dissolving. If your goal is weight loss or your concern is loose skin, it probably isn't the right fit — and we'll be upfront about that. When in doubt, a two-minute pinch test at your assessment gives you a clear, honest answer.
